Colombia has chosen a previous guerrilla warrior Gustavo Petro as president.

Making him the South American country's most memorable liberal top of state.

Petro's political race denotes a flowing movement for Colombia.

A country that has up until recently never had a radical president.

Follows comparable triumphs for the left in Peru, Chile and Honduras.

"Today is a party for individuals," tweeted the successful competitor on Sunday night after results came in.

"I earnestly trust that this choice is valuable for everyone."

The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, referred to the previous guerrilla's success as "noteworthy".

"The preservationists of Colombia have forever been constant and extreme," López Obrador tweeted.

"May such countless sufferings be padded in the delight that today floods the core of the country."
